Jottings from Father J.J.

Wash Feet Anyone?

The night before He died, the Lord gave us a compelling model to follow. We are to serve as He taught and give as He gives. The more we come to know Christ, the more we will recognize that all we are, all we have, and all we will become is purely a gift from Him. Our response to this generosity is to follow His example and give freely, fully and generously. Your help really can make a difference. Our answer to Jesus’ call to serve others will change not only those we serve but we who do the serving.

A few of the corporal works of mercy are to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, visit the sick, and bury the dead. Some of the spiritual works of mercy are to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, comfort the sorrowful, and pray for the living and dead.

This weekend is our “Called to Serve” weekend and you will find a thousand and one opportunities to share your gifts and be transformed. Please take the opportunity to go to the tables in the Social Hall and sign up for a fulfilling ministry. There will be folks there to answer any questions you may have. Someone is waiting for your service. Thank you for saying yes to Christ’s call.

Joy in Marriage

Often times the only time a marriage is looked at or talked about are when problems arise. We are more likely to discuss a couples union by saying, “Did you hear that so and so are getting a divorce?” Rather than, “Aren’t so and so a great couple?” There are problems that come up when two individuals become molded into one union. Often these are the best times of all. Friends of mine, Bob and Marian Smentowski are coming to speak about the JOY of Marriage this coming Saturday. They say that the joy of marriage occurs out of the ‘not so joyful’ things in married life. How do they know? You think the octo-mom is bad, they have parented 31 kids. Come join us for the first session of “God’s Love Made Visible” (our marriage enrichment ministry here in the parish). We have a gathering every month with a different speaker, topic, or event. Bob and Marian will be speaking Saturday, September 19th at 6:30 pm. See the registration form on page 5 of this week’s Good News for more details. Come join us!

God bless,

Fr. J.J.
