Fr. J.J.’s Jottings

YOU ARE LITERALLY MAKING US LOOK GOOD!

Can you improve on perfection!?!  It seems that two families in the parish are trying to do so. Ok, I’m being a little facetious, but I would like to acknowledge two very generous families who made donations to the “look” of the clergy here at St. Anastasia. The Vivian family donated a white chasuble (the vestment worn by the priest over his alb during Mass). It was given in memorial of Mr. Vivian’s wife, Lea.

John and Sharon Carry donated a cope (a cape-like vestment that can be used in liturgical situations). The length of this vestment is more suitable than the existing larger cope we own and will help Fr. Moses to not feel like a little kid playing dress up.

Thank you to these generous families!

“BUT FATHER, I HAVE ENOUGH TO DO!”

Years ago, after attending Mass with my parents on an off-campus weekend from the seminary, we discussed a faith sharing opportunity that was announced at the end of the liturgy. I encouraged them to join up. My extraverted and gregarious Dad seemed uncharacteristically hesitant. My Mom sat quietly with no response. I pushed them. My Dad said he would be willing and my Mom gave a half-hearted response. Catholic guilt can sometimes be a good thing, because in the next few minutes I got them to at least promise to inquire about what the opportunity entailed.

Zoom forward a decade or so and you would find that the group my parents joined was still going strong. They gathered with their “now-established” friends regularly and not only saw their relationships with each other strengthen, but their faith and relationship with the Lord grow by leaps and bounds. Oh, and as my Dad said, “It’s fun!”

I tell you this story because we are offering a similar faith enriching opportunity. Catholic 2 Catholic is an opportunity to move your faith from your head to your heart. This is for all Catholics, including you cradle Catholics. It will bring your faith alive and help you to better understand what you doing.

I invite you to come on Saturday, August 17 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Maryville Retreat Center (18307 Taylor Lake Rd., Holly, MI 48442). Registration deadline is August 7, so please contact Marian Bart at 248-689-8380 ext 108 or email her

God bless,
Fr. J.J.
