World Youth Day Updates

by Rebecca McKelvey • August 19, 2011

Reflections from Fr. Eric before the trip

Since a group of young adults and I are leaving this weekend for World Youth Day in Madrid, as well as for other pilgrimage sites, I thought it would be good to give some general information regarding the holy sites we will be going to with your prayer intentions.

The first major pilgrimage site we will be going to is the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima, Portugal.  At this location there were six apparitions (or “appearances”) of Our Lady, from May 13 to October 13, 1917, to three peasant children, named Lucia Santos (who has a cause of canonization open for her), Blessed (one step away from “Saint”) Jacinta Marto, and her brother Blessed Francisco Marto.  During the apparitions Mary told the children to have processions in honor of her Immaculate Conception and to tell the faithful to do penance and pray the Rosary because otherwise the world would be chastised for its sins.  During the October apparition 70,000 people witnessed a miraculous solar phenomenon where the sun appeared to be dancing. (known as the “Miracle of the Sun”)  In 1930 the bishops of Portugal declared the apparitions to be authentic, and subsequently the Holy See (the Vatican) declared the apparitions to be authentic.  This site is also significant because Blessed Pope John Paul II visited the Shrine on May 13, 1982, the 65th anniversary of Our Lady’s first appearance, in order to thank Mary for   preserving him from death exactly one year earlier when he was shot!

The second pilgrimage site we will go to is the shrine of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in the mountain region of northwest Spain not far from the sea.  The church is the medieval shrine of St. James the Greater (one of the 12 Disciples), to which pilgrims have traveled (on the “Way of St. James”) from as early as the 8th century.  St. James is thought to have traveled to Spain as a missionary.  Although he was beheaded in Jerusalem and buried there, tradition says that his body was later brought to Galicia and ultimately, in 830 A.D., to Compostela.  His relics are located there, and the authenticity of them was declared by Pope Leo XIII in 1884.  After Rome and Jerusalem, Compostela is said to rank third in the order of importance of pilgrimage centers for the Christian world!

Our third major pilgrimage site will be the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, in southern France.  This is a world famous shrine where Our Lady appeared 18 times to the 14 year old St. Bernadette Soubirous in the year of 1858 and identified herself with the words “I am the Immaculate Conception.”  Just four years earlier in 1854, Blessed Pope Pius IX defined as dogma the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary! This  appearance took place in the rock cave (or “grotto”) of Massabielle along the River Gave near Lourdes, where a spring began to flow from the direction of the apparitions of Our Lady.  St. Bernadette was instructed to drink from this spring, which stills flows today and has effected thousands of miraculous cures which have been attested to by the medical bureau established at Lourdes.  Not only physical miracles occur there, but also immediate conversions to Christ and His Church.  The miraculous healings are reported to occur after one bathes in the waters of the spring or during the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament at processions and other ceremonies.

Lastly, we will travel to Madrid, Spain and spend about 8 days there for World Youth Day.  World Youth Day is a gathering of about one   million youth from around the world, it occurs about every three years, and the pinnacle of it is when the Pope comes for a few days to speak directly to the youth, lead a Eucharistic Adoration vigil liturgy at night and then celebrate Mass the next    morning. This is a very powerful  experience for many youth with   numerous conversions occurring in the presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist and in the presence of our Holy Father, who is the Vicar of Christ on earth, meaning that he is the most direct representative of  Jesus Christ on earth!  This will be my first World Youth Day and I look forward especially to con-celebrating Mass with Pope Benedict XVI!!  God bless and know your petitions will be remembered at each holy site!

In Christ through Mary,
Fr. Eric

Diocesan Mass 8/18/11

Aug 16
So today was a day that I thought would never end lol. We had to find where father Eric could get his credentials, had to walk about a mile to find out we were at the wrong building and we had to go another two miles.. We WERE going to take the subway but ended up walking the whole way… Then had a slice of pizza for lunch… That wasn’t enough and then continued to walk around the city in the 100 degree weather. The majority of us cut it short to come home before mass!

Opening mass was CRAZY! There were just thousands and thousands of people there. Then we had to do more walking trying to figure out where to meet Father Eric and Father Patrick. We then went the wrong way so we walked all the way back to o…

Aug 15
Our bus broke down 1 hour outside of Mardid :(

Fun fact= Cass keeps saying ‘urinals’ when she means Euros…makes all of us including Cass laugh!!

Just had dinner at VIP’s. Hamburger, salad, French fries and an apple with bottled water. Yummy! Finally don’t have to get up at 6am in the morning tomorrow!!

We are at the hotel FINALLY!! We are in Father Eric’s room doing Mass before it is midnight! Pretty nice hotel in a good location! We have a balcony and a corner room so it is bigger! Yay.

So right now we are in the middle of nowhere sitting on the side of the road. Our bus broke down! Thankfully there was a small café on the side of the road with wifi! Haha

Lourdes was awesome!! I did not realize that there are 3 Basilica’s on the grotto site and they are all beautiful. The grotto was inspiring and we all felt goose bumpy! We left our petitions in the grotto by the apparition site. Each of us had unique experiences with baths both physically and spiritually. We celebrated Sunday Mass in one of the chapels on the basilica site

Guggenhiem

Basilicas of the Rosary and the Immaculate ConceptionCandle Light Vigil

Maria of the Angel

Me to the St. A´s Pilgrims: What has inspired you so far on this pilgrimage?
Cass: What impressed me is that I met a lady that is related to somebody who saw an Angel and Mary!
Cass is referring to Maria of the Angels who is niece to Sr. Lucia of Fatima ;)

We made it to Lourdes! It is beautiful here. We just had a great dinner! A chicken noodle soup (minus the chicken and noodle lol) a delicious pizza and chicken, veggies and potatoes! Now we are all heading to a candle light vigil!

Friday we spent over 12 hours on the road traveling to Bilbao…largely due to traffic…so we watched movies Our Lady of Fatima and said our morning and evening prayers!! We tried to remember the patience of Maria of the Angels…the scenery was quite beautiful also and very mountainous….

Fr. Eric Concelbrating Mass

Wednesday and Thursday we stayed in Santiago de Compestela which is the resting place of St. James the Greater. We were able to tour the Major Cathedral and view the relics of St. James. Santiago is Spanish for James…not sure how they came up with that translation? The city of Santiago is as beautiful as it us ancient! Father Eric was able to concelebrate Mass at this Major Cathedral…I cannot even begin to describe how beautiful and inspiring the inside and outside of the Cathedral is…

We also placed the prayer satchel from St. Anastasia at the foot of Our Lady in the chapel, which is the exact place of Her apparition to the three shepherd children. We celebrated Mass in that same chapel and Father Eric was able to concelebrate

When you looked into the eyes of Maria of the Angles we saw the light of Christ….if we all had the patience of this woman the world we be a better place!! Later that night we joined the candlelight procession with Our Lady of Fatima….we said the rosary in six different languages….Spanish, Italian, English, Polish, Viet Naimese and Arabic…funny how you can recognize the prayers of the rosary no matter what language…catholic=universal=Catholic!!!

Fatima was awesome…we met Sr. Lucia´s niece…Maria of the Angels, she is 90+ years old…it was so sweet to watch Cassie introduce herself to this living Saint Maria of the Angels….Cass was the first one in our group to go up to her and Cass kissed her on the cheek….which gave the rest of us courage to introduce ourselves…

Having dinner and dessert in Fatima with St.A’s and Boilermaker pilgrims…celebrated Mass at the Miracle of the Eucharist church in Santarem Portugal.Tomorrow Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Basilica where we will offer up the petitions from St. A’s…priceless!!!!!!!!!

Today was a very long day!! We were on the bus for more than 1/2 the day! We finally made it to Bilabo around 8pm! Gnite Facebook from Europe!

Well we are up and getting ready to leave! It is 6:30am! Good by Santiago, here we come Bilabio. I will miss the beautiful view from our window in Santiago!

Aug 11
The local culture! Spaniards playing music and singing while everyone chants and dances!!

Aug 10
Finally able to update!! We made it to Santiago at about 8pm Spain time. We left at noon Spain time and stopped for lunch in Coimbra. It was beautiful and the first time I had authentic Portugal food! We had an amazing dinner at the hotel, some real authentic Spanish food!!

Ooh my goodness!! I just went down this center of the Basilica on my knees…. They are killing me but I feel good! There are people out there that are in constant pain and it makes you realize how good you have it… Chrissy, Maureen, Maria, Tiffany, Father Eric and Josh all did the same! I would have to guess it is a 1/4 mile… Never thought I would do that!

Aug 9
Chrissy and I find it weird that we toured all of Fatima and everyone back at home is just getting up! What a BEAUTIFUL day in Fatima! Now heading to eat lunch!

Had a GREAT NIGHT SLEEP! Just had breakfast! They sure like ham and cheese in Europe! We are getting ready to tour Fatima!!

Aug 7
Just arrived in Chicago. Waiting to get off the plane due to weather delay. Now we will wait in the airport until our flight to Madrid at 4:40.

PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!!
Next weekend, we invite Liz Lev to our hallowed halls. Who is she, you ask? After studying Renaissance art at the  University of Chicago and doing graduate work at the University of Bologna, in Baroque art, she moved to Rome where the intersection of the sacred and the beautiful opened her eyes to greater and deeper meaning in art. I have had the privilege of hearing her speak once and she is amazingly dynamic. So dynamic that one of our employee’s teens stated “I wish that had been longer. I could’ve listened to her all night. If she would’ve kept talking, I would’ve kept learning things.” Ms. Lev is so good, she has been featured on the History Channel, EWTN and The Today Show. Her presentation: A BODY FOR GLORY: Why Michelangelo’s Nudes Trump the Greeks will take place in the Social Hall next Saturday, August 27th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Ms. Lev’s presentation is  appropriate for teens as well, is FREE, and open to the public. There will be wine and cheese served as well. Come join us, listen to a great speaker, and have a fun, free evening out. Please call Regina at 248-689-8380, Ext. 120 and register a spot, they are going quick. Read the full article...

BIBLES, BIBLES EVERYWHERE!
Responding to an appeal from Bishop Borgess in 1883, five Sisters of the Good Shepherd arrived in downtown Detroit to establish their first home. The industrial revolution brought progress and success to the area but left thousands of young girls and women behind, most of them living and working in desperate conditions. By the turn of the century, 33 sisters were caring for more than 200 girls and young women in their facility. Read the full article...

Can you Walk on Water?

Today’s Gospel is the well known story of Peter walking on water. Jesus tells Peter to step out of the safety of the boat and walk to Him across the water. Buoyed with his great faith, Peter steps into the water and takes his first steps. Only when he looks away from Jesus does his faith falter and he sinks into the sea.

As we navigate the seas of our lives, those that are both treacherous and calm, Jesus is with us all the while. He is the bridge that carries us over the hills and valleys of our lives. He is the outstretched hand that is always ready to save us from the deep. As we move from fear to faith, we are strengthened by the assurance that there is nowhere God is not, no heart in which God does not choose to dwell, and no hand that God will not reach out to save.

Have a blessed week,
Deacon Ron

CLARITY ON THAT STATUE
You probably received a post card from the parish reminding you to vote for St. Anastasia to win the Trinity statue, worth $50,000. No parish funds were spent on that mailing (done in bulk, so it was cheaper). A donation was made to me specifically for the purpose of sending out a notice. We only have until August 15th, so VOTE!
